Grinding machines are machine tools which utilize an abrasive wheel to produce fine finishes or light cuts on products.

The term "grinding machine" refers to this general idea; there are numerous brands and styles fitting within this umbrella term. For instance, the wheel size on grinding machines varies greatly and there can be an array of stones, diamonds or other inorganic materials used for the cutting element.

Rotary speed, surface or linear speed, power and current all are distinguishing specifications of different forms of grinding machines. While some grinding machines are best suited for woodworking or metalworking, others are better in automotive applications, such as part grinding and paint sanding.

Grinding machines can further be found in the manufacturing of medical devices, ceramics, glass, plastic, composites, semiconductors and electronics. Their uses include cleaning and surface preparation, tool sharpening, deburring and deflashing. Belt grinders, bench grinders, cylindrical grinders, surface grinders, tool and cutter grinders, and jig grinders are all names of specific types of grinders.

For components to cell phones to computers and automobiles to airplanes, Okamoto is one brand of grinding machines widely known and respected. In a global market where only a select group of manufacturers have the competitive strength to meet its clients' needs, its abrasive machine technology rises above the rest to the tune of 20,000 clients in 80 different countries, a fact that pleases president and general manager John Gannon.

"We are the only machine tool maker in the world to introduce technologies that were developed for the semi-conductor industries to the grinding machines such as our ultra-precision grinding and our ultra-precision rotary lines, " Gannon says.

Around-the-clock machine support for its customers and cutting-edge industry innovations have further helped this company retain its competitive edge in today's marketplace. Their award-winning reputation has made their name a trusted brand for some of the world's top corporations.

Mitsui is the name of another major company for grinding machines. Its namesake founder, chairman and CEO Motokazu Yoshida has seen his company grow immensely since opening up half a century ago as a tiny shop with only two employees. Using the theory that lower prices will deepen and broaden demand for its products, the company enjoys great demand and success today, boasting annual sales exceeding $350 million. Fifty years of perpetual growth demonstrates the company's commitment to providing high-quality, low-cost products.

Due to innovations and worldwide demand, both companies have incorporated high-speed grinding machines into their product lines; as their name suggests, these are machines capable at working at speeds greater than most, up to 150 m/sec.
